Verizon Wireless has just released a much awaited Android 2.1 update for Motorola Droid.
The news about this update was received by Engadget this morning which was sent by Verizon Wireless. By seeing that email, it sounds like this OTA (Over-The-Air) update will begin hitting Motorola Droid owners in just few minutes.
Verizon Wireless has scheduled the software update because they first wanted to check how the update works.

Motorola Droid Android 2.1 Update – Key Features and Enhancements
This update brings following features and enhancements:
- Yahoo Mail
Now you can simply sign in using your Yahoo! Email address and password. But you can’t use Yahoo! Email over Wi-Fi - Pinch to Zoom
This features is now available in the Browser, Maps, and Gallery - Speech-to-Text
Customers can now use their voice instead of typing whenever a text-entry box appears - Google Googles
Goggle Googles app is now preloaded - Gallery App
This new app uses 3D layout and shows pictures taken with your device and images from Picasa Web Albums account online
Motorola Droid Android 2.1 Update – Update Notification Schedule
Below is the software update notification schedule. Note: All times listed below are Eastern Time):
- At noon on March 30 – 1,000 users will receive notification of the update.
- At 11:59 PM on March 30 – 9,000 more users will receive the update notification.
- After the first 10,000 users receive the update on March 30 – Then there will be a 24-hour period gap when no additional upgrades will be delivered.
- On April 1 - 200,000 more users will receive the update notification at 11:59 PM.
- This schedule will continue each day thereafter until the update has been delivered to all users.
By seeing the above schedule it looks like patience will be your only friend as you await your turn.
Motorola Droid Android 2.1 Update – Downloading and Installing Conditions
Below are the downloading and installing condition of this update:
- This OTA(Over-The-Air) download requires 40% or more power availability if the device is not connected to an external power source. But if your device is connected to an external source then it requires 20% or more power.
- If roaming, you will not receive the update. The only option in this scenario is that you need to enable Wi-Fi and wait for a mandatory OTA. The wait period in this case will not be more than 12 hours.
- You must need to wait to receive the upgrade via OTA.
- You will be unable to make or receive calls, including emergency calls during upgrade.
