iPhone OS 4 – Top 7 Features
Below I’ve described the top 7 features added in iPhone OS 4:
The first tentpole is Multitasking and is one of the most awaited feature of iPhone OS. It allows you to run multiple apps in the background while preserving performance and battery life. There are seven multitasking services for users and developers, that are Background Music, Voice over IP (VoIP), Background location, Push notifications, Local notifications, Task completion, and Fast app switching.
This feature is only available for iPhone 3GS and 3rd generation iPod Touch (32GB and 64GB).
The second tentpole is Folders. It allows you to organize all your apps into folders with easy drag-and-drop simplicity. It gives you faster access to your favorites, and you can browse and manage up to 2160 apps at once – which is much more than the current limit of 180 apps.
Example: You have several games and wanted to make a folder with all games in it. All you have to do is push your finger on an app, they will start to jiggle, and then drop one app on top of another and it will instantly make a folder. It also name the folder automatically based on the categories of the apps you’ve selected, or you can also rename it. You can create as many folders as you like, there’s no limit, and you can also put a folder in the dock for easy access.
The third tentpole is Enhanced Mail. It shows messages from multiple email accounts displayed together in a unified inbox, you can also switch between inboxes more quickly, organize messages by threads, and can also open attachments in a third-party apps.
The fourth tentpole is iBooks. It’s a delightful ebook reader and also the best way to browse, buy, and read books on a mobile device. Easily flip through the pages of a book you’ve downloaded from the iBookstore. You just need to purchase the books once and can read them anywhere. Browse tens of thousands of books by title, author, or genre. Many of the books are available for free and you can even check the reviews and read sample pages before buying.
The fifth tentpole is Enterprise. It has some really nice features for business, which includes, better data protection, Mobile Device Management, Wireless app distribution, Multiple Exchange accounts, Exchange Server 2010, and support for SSL VPN.
The sixth tentpole is Game Center. Gaming is extremely popular on the iPhone and iPod Touch. The Game Center have more than 50,000 games and entertainment titles. To make gaming even more better on iPhone and iPod Touch, they added social gaming network, MatchMaking, Leaderboards, and Achievements. It’ll be available in summer this year.
The seventh tentpole is iAd. We all knew that Apple has some plans to release a mobile advertising network, that is iAd. It is a breakthrough advertising platform from Apple. With it, apps can feature rich media ads that combine the emotion of TV with the interactivity of the web. For developers, it is a new and easy way to implement advertisements in the apps and generate some revenue. For advertisers, it creates a new media outlet that offers consumers highly targeted information.
