Apple has just officially released the final version of iOS 4.0 for iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G, iPod Touch 3G and iPod Touch 2G. The iOS 4.0 is now publicly available for download for free. This final release has the same build number as GM candidate that is 8A293 which was earlier released by Apple for developers at WWDC 10. At the same event the iPhone OS 4 was officially renamed to iOS 4.
The iOS 4 is fully compatible with iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch 3G, but for iPhone 3G and iPod Touch 2G only multitasking feature will not work. The iOS 4 for iPad is expected to release and available by fall of this year. It brings more than hundreds of new features, improvements, and enhancements.

To update your iPhone or iPod Touch to iOS 4 then follow the step by step guide posted below:
- Download latest version of iTunes from here
- Connect your iPhone or iPod Touch to your computer via USB
- Start iTunes
- When iTunes opens, select iPhone/iPod Touch under “Devices” in the “Source List” on the left
- In the iPhone/iPod Touch “Summary” pane, click “Check for Updates”
- Now click “Download and Install” to get the new iOS 4 firmware
Note: Do not disconnect your iPhone/iPod Touch until the update has finished
