Sherif Hashim has tweeted about the way to activate iPhone without having the original SIM card. He has posted a video with complete guide for the activation of iPhone. Using that guide you can activate iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, and iPhone 4 with any SIM card you like. Though the iPhone 4 users have to cut the SIM to micro-SIM card size to use it.
For those who don’t know, Sherif Hashim is the person who found the exploit to unlock iPhone’s baseband 05.13.04 and 05.12.01 running iOS 4.

This shows how to get iTunes to request an activiation using a phone book card. It never shows how to actually activate another network using another network’s sim.
