iPhone Dev Team has just released the new version of redsn0w tool to jailbreak iOS 4.1 firmware.
This tool can only jailbreak iPhone 3G and iPod touch 2G on the latest iOS 4.1. While other iDevices will be jailbreakable when new tool is released.
According to the iPhone Dev Team blog:
“This is a beta release of redsn0w for the iPhone3G and iPod Touch 2G at FW 4.1 or 4.0. It uses the same pwnage2 DFU-mode exploit that we’ve been using since the 2.x days. It does not include the SHAtter exploit developed by pod2g. Nothing new is revealed to Apple with this jailbreak.
The Windows version needs further testing, so for now this is available only for Mac OS X x86.
If you have an “MC” model of the ipt2g, your jailbreak will be tethered…sorry! (Consider rolling back to a FW supported by jailbreakme.com or spiritjb.org)”
How to Jailbreak iOS 4.1 on iPhone 3G and iPod touch 2G
To jailbreak your iPhone 3G / iPod touch 2G on iOS 4.1 then follow the step-by-step guide posted below:
- Download the required iOS 4.1 for your iPhone/iPod touch (download link given below).
- Update to this latest firmware using the ipsw file you have just downloaded via iTunes 10.
- Download redsn0w 0.9.6b1 (download link given below), and then run it.
- Point it to the original iOS 4.1 ipsw file to proceed.
- Select “Install Cydia” (optionally, you can also select other options if you want) and then click “Next”.
- Now first, plug your device into the computer, switch off your device and then click “Next” (Do make sure that your device is both “powered off” and “plugged in” to the computer before clicking on “Next”).
- Now you’ve to connect your device in recovery mode, to do this, first you’ve to hold “Power” button and then also hold “Home” button. After few seconds release “Power” button but keep holding “Home” button until the installation is started.
- Now rest of the tasks are automated. Once all the tasks are completed, your iPhone/iPod touch will reboot automatically.
- Now you should have a jailbroken iPhone 3G / iPod touch 2G on the latest iOS 4.1 firmware.
